Magic Jack Performance

Like any useful tool you might own, understanding a little about it will help you get the best experience from it. Magic Jack’s crystal clear call quality comes from its advanced VOIP technology. Remember, it uses your internet connection via your computer to make the calls so here are some things you can do to ensure the absolute best call experience.

Ensure the health of your computer
Make sure your computer has plenty of free hard disk space. Even though Magic Jack requires very little disk space, other programs may need more. Some programs run automatically by themselves so you’ll want to ensure that your computer has plenty of disk space for virtual ram and swap files (you don’t have to know what these are, just that your computer runs better when it has more hard disk space available). Uninstall programs you don’t need or haven’t used in a long time. You can also set your computer to defragment your hard disk overnight. This might free up some space, with the added benefit of making your programs start up quicker.

Then make sure your computer has enough free RAM (memory) available when idle (meaning you’re not using it for anything). The simplest way to do this is to be certain that you don’t have dozens of programs running in the background waiting to do stuff. Many programs like to start themselves up when you boot up your computer and hide waiting to be used. Programs like instant messengers, webcam software, old printer monitoring software, etc. Check your computers ‘Start Up’ folder or use the Task Manager to see what’s running. Shut down everything that you can confirm isn’t a necessity or that you don’t use anymore.

Next you’ll want to ensure that your Magic Jack adapter is plugged into a USB port that is populated by as few other peripherals as possible. USB peripherals are often attached to a “hub” that allows for you to plug-in many more USB devices into just 1 USB port (similarly to one of those surge strips that people plug many computer devices into). Try to ensure that your Magic Jack adapter is plugged into a single USB port and not attached to a USB hub if possible.

Anti-virus and Anti-malware software can go a long way to helping your computer get healthy and stay that way. Many free options are available on the web. This is a highly recommended step, not only to help your Magic Jack run at its’ best, but also to keep your computer running in tip-top shape for all the time you own it.

If you’re going to use a headset and microphone instead of a telephone, use a good quality set. This is an easy item to try and scrimp on.  Some are available for less than 5 dollars. Try not to buy at the bottom end of the price scale here. Good quality, comfortable headset/mic combos can be had for less than 20 dollars and will go a long way to helping you enjoy your Magic Jack experience to the fullest. Remember Magic Jack makes using your phone more affordable than ever so you’ll want a good headset.
